Our Hypnos Wool Origins 6 mattress review puts the brand's entry-level double-sided wool pocket-spring mattress through its paces to see how it compares to the best mattresses Ideal Home has tested so far.

Quick review

I’ve now slept on the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 mattress for two years, which I'd estimate is around 5,000 hours of testing. I like to sleep on my side, my co-tester is liable to overheating at night and is a back sleeper. I also test mattresses regularly as part of my day job, so together we combine to make a very discerning (read: fussy) testing team. Which is why I feel very well qualified to tell you that this is a brilliant mattress.

A double-sided pocket sprung mattress that uses eight fleeces of reponsibly-sourced, British Red Tractor wool for its comfort layers, the Wool Origins 6 mattress offers comfort and support in any sleep position, good motion isolation, and great edge support. As a sprung mattress with no memory foam in sight, it also offers good responsiveness meaning there's a nice amount of bounce to it rather than the slightly 'flat' feel of a memory foam mattress, and it's easy to change position on its surface.

Most importantly – especially for my partner who's prone to overheating at night – eliminating any synthetic foams or memory foam in favour of wool comfort layers means the Origins 6 is extremely breathable. That's great news for temperature regulation and will be a big draw for any hot sleepers.

Plus, Hypnos' commitment to using low impact, sustainable, and ethically-sourced natural fibres in its mattresses is second to none, making this one of the most environmentally-friendly mattresses I've tested. Read on to find out more.

1. Comfort

Hypnos state that the Origins 6 offers total body support. Their ReActivePro 6-turn springs are meant to individually cradle you, and respond to your every move. This should allow you to move around in your bed without waking, or waking anyone sleeping next to you. It should also mean you don’t feel pressure at the main points of contact on the bed – your shoulders and hips.

I tested the medium-firm mattress, and although I'd say it’s definitely on the firmer end of the scale I found that it was incredibly comfortable when I first laid down on it.

I prefer to sleep on my side, and in this position I feel supported and comfortable. I get no hint of any numbness creeping in at pressure points around shoulders, and I’m not woken at night by pain in my hips, a problem that I've encountered on other mattresses. I find that my spine stays well aligned on the Origins 6, and having suffered through testing many bad mattresses, I'm happy to report this one gave me zero back pain.

I also found I was gently supported across my shoulders and lower back while sleeping on my back. The mattress rises to meet me, rather than letting me sink in. Often on other mattresses I wake with a stiff or sore back after lying on my back, but on the Wool Origins mattress this never happens. My partner, who regularly sleeps on his back, was also impressed by the Origin 6's comfort levels in this position.

Whilst it isn't my usual sleeping position, I also gave sleeping on my front a go for the purposes of testing. I found my body stayed flat and my hips didn't sink too low which might have otherwise put pressure on my lower spine – probably that's thanks to that little extra firmness this mattress provides.

All in all, I think this mattress suits a range of sleeping positions, although having read through third-party customer reviews I have noticed a few people have mentioned finding it firmer than expected. This may be due to differences in body weight – heavier people tend to sink into a mattress more so need one with a higher tension, whereas lighter people tend to need softer mattresses as a medium-firm may feel too firm for them. If people are used to sleeping on a more cushioning memory foam mattress this could also play a part.

However, for me, this mattress is just right. I now really notice when sleeping on other mattresses how the support differs. I find most other mattresses offer less support compared the Origins 6, and I often wake with a stiff back in the morning – and I’m well aware my partner didn’t sleep well either.

2. Motion isolation

Good motion isolation is important in a mattress – especially if you co-sleep – as it reduces any disturbance from a partner fidgeting or moving around in the night.

On the Origins 6 I can’t feel my partner moving about in bed, however badly he’s sleeping. I also often share the bed with my young children (not by my choice) and they don’t wake me either, despite being unparalleled fidgeters. The pocket springs seem to do their job to isolate movement and move individually without affecting each other.

Plus, there is zero “roll together” on this mattress, with both my partner and I able to comfortably sleep in our own zones without being disturbed. We always notice when we stay somewhere else just how much this is a factor on other mattresses that we just don’t encounter on the Wool Origins 6, thankfully.

3. Responsiveness

Because this is a sprung mattress, it has brilliant bounce back and I didn’t notice any dips in the surface when I was lying on it. This allows for easy movement as the wool comfort layers don’t cocoon you in the same way a memory foam or latex mattress might – a sensation I don’t particularly love. This means I'm able to switch sides and change position on the mattress without any effort.

4. Temperature regulation

Thanks to the wool padding inside the mattress, the Origins 6 is naturally breathable and therefore excellent at temperature regulation. Wool keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. I’ve slept on this mattress on the warmest nights Britain has endured, and through some severe cold snaps and I’ve rarely struggled with my temperature.

On other mattresses – in particular memory foam mattresses – I have woken up sweaty and too hot on more than one occasion. This never happens on the Origin 6. Wool also wicks away the humidity that all of our bodies release on warm nights, so you don’t end up waking up sticky and clammy. And in winter, I'm toasty and warm.

I also love that the bed creates a microclimate just for me. My partner is usually hotter than me, but on this mattress I'm not affected by his body temperature and sleep peacefully whether he’s running hot or cold. He tends to have more issues than I do with overheating at night and finds the Hypnos Origins Wool 6 keeps him cooler compared to any other mattress he’s slept on.

5. Edge support

Hypnos’ 'Triple Edge Protection' uses three rows of higher-tension springs along all the edges of the mattress to ensure the Origins 6 has good edge support.

In real terms this means that you can enjoy lying on the full surface of the mattress, without worrying about the sides dipping and you rolling onto the floor should you get too close to the edge – this has happened on other mattresses I've tested, I won’t lie.

I find I’m often left clinging to the side of my bed when one, two or three of my children climb into it in the night. However, I’m able to lie right on the edge of the Origins 6 mattress and still feel supported. I wouldn’t suggest this as a long-term sleeping position, but it just goes to show how robust it is.

We also find that when we're sat on the side of the bed we're able to spring up easily to standing. This would be useful if standing is a bit tricky for you.

6. Ease of care

The Hypnos Wool Origins 6 is a traditional double-sided mattress with a wool comfort layer either side of its spring inner. This should mean that it has enhanced longevity compared to a one-sided mattress, as technically you have fifty percent extra sleep surface.

However, unlike a one-sided mattress which only needs rotating, that does mean you need to flip the Origins 6 seasonally to ensure even wear and tear.

This is made easier thanks to some sturdy side handles, although it's worth noting that the mattress is pretty heavy, so it may take two people to turn depending on the size of mattress that you opt for.

As mentioned, I've owned this mattress for two years now, and my love for the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 has not dwindled. I continue to be impressed night after night, and it hasn’t suffered any real performance loss despite the years I’ve so far slept on it.

7. Sleep trial

In my experience, Hypnos mattresses have a lot in their favour, but perhaps one of their biggest downsides is that the brand doesn't offer any sleep trials as standard.

A sleep trial allows you to order a mattress, test it out in your own home for a number of nights, and then return it if it isn't the right feel for you. Sleep trials are predominantly offered by online-only manufacturers, like Simba and Emma, because they don't have bricks-and-mortar stores where customers can test out their mattresses, but they're becoming more common across the board.

This does mean that many of the retailers Hypnos mattresses are sold through now offer sleep trials of their own, including John Lewis, Mattressman, and MattressNextDay, amongst others. So, it can be worth shopping around to see if there's a trial you can take advantage of before you buy – just remember that different retailers may also have different trial terms and conditions.

8. Delivery

Because Hypnos doesn’t sell its mattresses direct, you'll need to check the delivery options depending on which stockist you buy from. Most retailers should deliver the mattress to your room of choice, but some may also offer to remove any packaging for you and install the mattress onto your bedframe. They may also offer a mattress removal service to make it easier to dispose of your old mattress.

Happily my mattress was carried up the stairs for me to my room of my choice. It's worth noting that this isn't a mattress-in-a-box, instead it arrives flat – this mattress is sturdy and it wouldn’t be possible to roll it and vacuum pack it.

If you have an awkwardly shaped hallway or twisting flight of stairs to navigate that might mean you need to check your access measurements carefully. Although, very usefully, the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 is available in zip and link form if you order a king or super king size mattress. This means the mattress is delivered in two sections which can be zipped together once on the bed, and makes delivery much easier.

It’s also worth mentioning that there can be a long lead time on Hypnos mattresses, as they’re all handmade to order. This is good news for the environment as it means far less wastage, but worth factoring in if you'll have nowhere to sleep whilst you're waiting. My Origins 6 mattress took around two months to arrive after my order was placed, although we've also tested the Hypnos Pillow Top Select mattress, and this arrived far quicker.

9. Environmental impact

Hypnos has been making mattresses for over 100 years and still chooses to make its mattresses the traditional way, with a focus on natural and sustainable materials.

The brand states that all of its mattresses are foam-free and 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan, which is important, as the the National Bed Federation estimates that 6.4 million mattresses were disposed of between 2017 and 2021, and only 14% recycled.

Often this lack of recycling is due to the materials modern mattresses are made from, with glues, foams, and in particular memory foam, all very difficult to repurpose responsibly. This leads to a high number of mattresses being disposed of in landfill, where those petrochemical-based synthetics leach more harm into the environment and take can centuries to degrade.

Alternatively, natural materials – like the wool and cotton used in the Origins 6 mattress – are renewable, easy to recycle, and biodegradable, making natural-filled mattresses far kinder to the environment with a much lower environmental impact.

Hypnos is also committed to continually assessing its production processes to lower its environmental footprint further. In recent years it became the first carbon-neutral bedmaker in the world, was a recipient of the Queen's Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development in 2020, and in 2021 was the first bed-maker to be recognised by the National Bed Federation's (NBF) Sustainability Award for its industry-leading sustainability ethos.

All in all, if you're looking for a mattress that takes its environmental impact seriously, Hypnos' Wool Origins 6 mattress is jsut about as as good as it gets.

10. Value for money

And then to the other of this mattress' downsides, its price. As of writing a double in the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 is £2079 at full RRP. Although, now that this mattress is a few years past its first launch, I have seen it on offer at various retailers for a discounted price, which is good news for your sleep quality!

That price tag may seem high, but that's because so many mattresses on the market are made from cheap synthetics like foam and memory foam. These materials are comparitively very cheap to mass produce, but they have a high cost to the environment, and can tend to be less durable than a well-made traditional mattress.

In my opinion, the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 is worth paying for, and as Hypnos has a Royal Warrant and is the only bedmaker to actively supply all of the royal residences, it would seem I'm in good company in that opinion.

How I tested

Zoe Phillimore
Zoë Phillimore

I’m Zoë, a writer who helps the Ideal Home team put all manner of products through their paces to find the top recommendations for our readers. For this review, I put the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 mattress through Ideal Home's mattress testing processHere are my sleep stats:

Usual sleep position: side
Tension preference: medium-firm
Sleep problems: hip pain

In testing this mattress I assessed ten factors that the Ideal Home team deems vital to any mattress purchase.

I assessed the mattress for comfort, responsiveness, motion isolation, temperature regulation, and edge support through at home testing. This means that I slept on the mattress for a minimum of two weeks before writing my review. In fact, in the case of the Hypnos Wool Origins 6 mattress, I've slept on this mattress for over two years now.

Whilst writing my review I also took into consideration durability, any sleep trials available, the delivery process, and the mattress's environmental impact and its value for money.

Where possible, I also factored in third-party customer reviews – to see if they aligned or were at odds with my own experience – before writing my own review and giving this mattress a star rating.
