The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 mattress is currently under £350 for a double – the budget option impressed me during testing

This REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress review puts the brand's most affordable hybrid mattress through its paces to see how it compares to some of the best mattresses the Ideal Home team has tested. 

REM-Fit is a brand that has been in the mattress market since 2014 and it specialises in hybrid mattresses, combining cushioning memory foam top layers with pocket spring support.

The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress is the brand's entry-level hybrid mattress, with prices starting from £665 if you're looking for a double. However, regular sales can see discounts of up to 50% off on offer, which means you'll rarely need to pay full price. 

Prior to testing this mattress, myself and my husband (and our intruding toddler) were sleeping on the Zoma Hybrid mattress. However, we weren't feeling well rested in the mornings, and I was regularly experiencing pins and needles on my sides that woke me during the night. I also found I was overheating on its memory foam top layer, so I was eager to find out if swapping to the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress would get me a better night's sleep.

We tested out the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress for two months to assess ease of delivery and set-up, comfort, breathability, and motion transfer. Here's what I found.

I was sent the Pocket 1000 Mattress to replace my previous Zoma Hybrid mattress and have now slept on it for a couple of months. As a hot (and often bothered) side sleeper who is circa six months pregnant, comfort with support was at the top of my agenda when testing. I also prefer not to sink down on the sides of the mattress when attempting to launch out of bed in the morning.

I tested this mattress during summer when we had some muggy nights, so I’ve been able to get a good idea of how well this mattress regulates temperature too.

Construction

The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress features a multi-layered hybrid construction. All of the REM-Fit mattress range follow this construction, give or take a few exceptions. The Hybrid Pocket 1000 is the thinnest mattress in REM-Fit's roster, with four layers and a depth of 20cm.

The base layer and side walls are made from high-density support foam. The repurposed foam used in the side walls is designed to prevent roll-off and offer increased edge support.

Next, there are the 1000 encapsulated pocket springs, which give this mattress its name. Each of these springs is 12.5cm high and is designed to support spinal alignment and reduce motion transfer. The springs are constructed from triple tempered steel and wrapped in individual fabric pockets for better motion isolation. You won't feel them because they are buried beneath the top layer but they'll be working their magic every night to keep you feeling supported.

The top layer of the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress is the comfort layer. This is made up of 'REM-Cell foam' which is a type of memory foam that the brand states is 30x more breathable than traditional memory foam. It's made with sustainably sourced natural plant bio polyols derived from vegetable oils, making up a depth of 5cm.

Wrapping up all four of these layers is a thermo-regulating, hypoallergenic knitted cover. It's fastened by a zip all the way around the sides of the mattress, making it easy to remove it for machine washing at 30-degrees.

Delivery

The delivery of the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress was seamless. Once the order had been placed I received a text message from the courier company Rhenus, giving me a selection of delivery times and dates to choose from. On the day of delivery I received a phone call to advise the delivery time frame.

The mattress arrived rolled and bagged in a red delivery bag as REM-Fit has stopped using cardboard boxes to reduce packaging. 

The delivery drivers took the mattress straight upstairs and into the bedroom for me and even offered to unpack it for me, although I declined as I wasn't quite ready to get it onto the bed at the time. It saved a lot of effort having the mattress moved on my behalf, and I'm assured that this service comes as standard.

However, when it did come time to unpackaging the bag ourselves, we did find it a little tricky. 

The mattress is tightly vacuum packed in plastic, which is then couriered in the red delivery bag. This outer bag is slightly longer than the length of the mattress so it took some wrestling to shunt the mattress out of the bag and onto our wooden slatted base frame.

A handy little cutter is included inside the red bag to help with breaking into the vac-packed mattress. Although this would have been helpful to have on hand to set free the mattress from the delivery bag.

The good news is that there was very little off-gassing with this mattress. This means that it didn't smell strongy of chemicals when I removed the plastic wrapping. It's often a common thing with bagged foam mattresses and memory foam mattresses, so I was relieved that this wasn't the case with the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress.

Comfort

The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress combines a top layer of memory foam with individually pocketed 12.5cm high springs underneath. 

The memory foam is main layer that you'll be in contact with when lying on this mattress, and I found that it supported me perfectly. I didn't wake with any pins and needles (like I did on the firmer Zoma Hybrid), and – thanks to the memory foam's open-cell structure I felt cool and comfortable throughout the night.

The addition of the pocket springs make the mattress feel wonderfully bouncy – not too much or too little – which really did enhance the comfort aspect. The springs also responded well to any motion transfer when one of us tossed and turned in the night, so we both slept well without being disturbed.

REM-Fit have officially rated this mattress as having a medium-firm tension  of 7 out of 10 (with 10 being the firmest feel). I concur with this – the mattress didn't feel too soft or too hard. As a side-sleeper, I found that the memory foam and springs worked perfectly in harmony to provide a soft yet supported surface to sleep on.

One of the biggest factors that can dictate the firmness rating of this mattress for you is your weight and build. This mattress is designed for people weighing between 9 and 20 stone. If you're much lighter or heavier than this then there's a high chance that you'll experience a different sleep experience to what I've have.

Fortunately, REM-FIT offer a 200-night free trial. This means that if it isn't as comfortable as you would like then you can return it. It's free to return and you won't be charged for the collection cost. The brand do recommend that you try to sleep on it for up to 30 days to allow your body to adjust to it though, so I'd say that it would be worth sticking with it for one month (at least) to give it a chance.

Temperature regulation

REM-Fit employ an open-cell memory foam layer on the Hybrid Pocket 1000 mattress that the brand states is 30 times more breathable than 'old school' memory foam. This open-cell structure aims to allow more air flow to prevent any sweating or overheating over night.

The brand also states that the knitted mattress cover is 'thermos-regulating', meaning it should aid breathability to prevent overheating. Whilst it's made from 100% polyester rather than natural materials, I can assure you that it is breathable. 

On testing, we found the memory foam upper layer comfortable and squishy and weren't plagued by any of the overheating that occured on our previous memory foam hybrid mattress.

Motion isolation

I must say that at no point during the night did I roll into the middle of the mattress, nor did my husband wake me from his fidgeting. 

The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress is suitable for a combined weight of up to 40 stone (20 stone per sleeper) and as a couple of tall, well-built testers, I can vouch that my husband and I experienced no bad sinking experience or rude awakenings from the mattress.

To further test the motion isolation I pulled up my 10kg weight into the centre of the mattress and bravely put a half-full pint-sized glass of water as close to it as I dared. There was a good 25cm between the two items before the glass started to slightly tilt.

Edge support

The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress has a layer that is specially designed for edge support; high density foam walls.

I found that the mattress barely sunk when I was sat on the edge of the bed, keeping a relatively even tension across the surface of the mattress. And, as you can see from the photograph, my 10kg weight didn't start to topple until it was hanging well over the side of the bed. 

I didn't struggle to launch myself off the side of the bed in the morning or night either. 

I must say that considering this is only a 20cm-deep mattress I'm pleasantly surprised at the level of edge support that this mattress offers. It's far sturdier than other budget mattresses I've tested, such as the Emma Premium mattress where my weight made the mattress edge dip by 5cm and I was in danger of rolling off during the night.

Additional features

There are a couple of final pros and cons to end with. One downside is that the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress has handles on the underside, not sides, which will make it difficult to turn the mattress if you need to. This also caused a problem for me when unwrapping the mattress because it unrolled upside-down so I had to awkwardly try to flip and turn it on my own. I even pulled one handle off at the seams with all the weight I was trying to lift.

However, a plus point is REM-Fit's sleep trials, which, as of writing, allow you 200 nights to test this mattress out in your own home. The brand then donates any returned mattresses (all of which must be in a resaleable condition) to the British Heart Foundation.

REM-Fit mattress deals

Although I can't say I check everyday, there has rarely been a time that I haven't encounted some kind of sale on the REM-Fit website. At the time of writing this review (July 2024) for example, the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress is discounted from £665 down to £332.50 for a double.

This said, there are a few key times in the year where the discount could be even deeper. Sales events to check back on are Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Boxing Day and January sales.

Verdict

The REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress is fairly thin at 20cm deep, and doesn't have as many layers to it as other mattresses in the brand's range, which I suppose isn't surprising considering it's the brand's entry-level mattress. 

For instance, the brand's top of the range mattress, the REM-Fit 600® Lux Elite Hybrid Mattress (which I'm reviewing next) offers a deeper layer of memory foam and 5000 pocket springs compared to this mattresses 1000 springs.

Despite this, I still found this mattress to be of a decent quality considering it's surprisingly affordable (especially when on sale, which is often).

I also found it slept cooler than many memory foam mattresses I've tested at a similar price point, and I was really impressed by its edge support and motion isolation.

Overall, if you're looking for a decent hybrid memory foam mattress that won't break the bank, I think the REM-Fit Hybrid Pocket 1000 Mattress offers good value for money.
