How to make a coastal candle holder
Comb the shore in search of washed up treasures and integrate them into your décor with this beachy jam-jar upcycle idea from Country Homes & Interiors
If, like us, you while away summer days wandering along beautiful coastlines, you're sure to spot many a washed-up treasure, whether it be a beautifully formed bit of driftwood or a stand-out shell in soft, sandy hues. Make this sweet candle holder, adorned with beachy finds, to give them pride of place in your home.
You will need:
- Beach combing finds, e.g. shells, pebbles, driftwood etc.
- Jam-jar
- String (we opted for rustic jute, but colourful string or baker's twine works well too!)
- Scissors
- Electric drill
Step one
Wind a length of string twice around the rim of a jar and knot securely.
Step two
Cut six lengths of string, three times the height of the jar, then fold each in half and tie to the rim string so you have 12 even ends. Knot pairs of strings together (using the photo as a guide) to create a net effect.
Step three Use an electric drill to make a small hole in each of your beach finds. Tie them on and add a plaited string handle, to finish.
Looking for the perfect finishing touch? If you're after real seaside style, pour a layer of sand into the bottom of your jar and place your tealight gently on top. For more of a fun, jaunty feel, add fabric off-cuts and ribbon in bold nautical shades.
When it comes to styling, soft candlelight is perfect for outdoor entertaining on long summer evenings. For real seaside style, use your holders to line pathways and decking, or why not hang them from tree branches in your garden?
