Refresh your home in coastal style with Sainsbury's
Bring marine charm into your home with Sainsbury's latest collection of sea-inspired home accessories
Looking for a fresh new look for your home? Cosy, relaxed and effortlessly chic, the coastal trend is perfect for breathing new life into your interiors. Even better, it is very easy to pull off - especially now that Sainsbury's has launched a fabulous new collection of coastal homeware.
Sainsbury's twelve in-house designers tour the world to bring you the very best interior decorating ideas and, this year, they have looked to the British coastline for inspiration. Their new range is brimming with cushions, vases and accessories that echo the organic shapes and colours of the sea.
Coastal style is all about creating that sense of luminous, airy, open space you find beside the seaside. Texture and colour should work together to achieve this feel. Team pale, muted hues such as white, sand and grey, with navy, steel or inky blue accents, and combine them with interesting, tactile surfaces reminiscent of wind-, salt- and sand-beaten shores. Distressed wood is an obvious choice, as is rope, but you should also consider interesting glassware and laundered cotton coverings for an original take on the look.
To keep your scheme fresh, use restraint and avoid clutter - this is a breezy, minimalist style. Instead, choose to sprinkle subtle coastal references across your home. Cushions featuring faded nautical prints are an easy way to work the trend into your living room, for example, especially when paired with soft linens in cool grey and blue shades. A carefully curated display of marine objects, such as a model sailing boat, a nautical clock or a rope knot, easily creates a visual focus, as does interesting pottery and glassware in the hues of sea and shore.
White, blue and sand are also the colours of choice in the dining room, where you can have some fun with stripy cutlery, fish-shaped platters and fish-themed mugs, jugs and bowls in pretty cream and blue glazes.
Striped linens in the same hues will immediately give a coastal feel to your bedroom and bathroom. Combine them with nautical accessories, such as rope or wicker baskets, a port-hole mirror or patterned throws. And for the ultimate focal point, don't forget to hang some marine art on your walls - it will give any room the wow factor.
