The best countryside locations to propose on Leap Day
According to tradition, Leap Years are supposedly the only day in the year that women can propose to men. So if you're thinking of popping the question this month, these stunning locations should provide some inspiration!
Old Irish folklore states that on 29 February women can get down on one knee and propose to their men. There was even a law once in place that declared a man had to buy 12 pairs of gloves for his lady if he were to deny her proposition, to save her the embarrassment of a ring-less hand in public. So if you're planning on breaking tradition this coming Leap Day and popping the question to your man, here are some of our favourite romantic destinations in the UK to set the scene...
1. Lake Windermere
At 10.5 miles long, Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. Situated in the heart of the Lake District and surrounded by rolling hills, this is a glorious setting for a proposal. Head out on to the jetty to watch the sunset, go boating or amble along the water's edge, the choice is yours...
2. Blickling Woods
The Blickling Estate in Norfolk is owned by The National Trust and boasts over 950 acres of woodland, perfect for a romantic stroll with your loved one. Keep an eye out for wild deer as you wander through the grounds, and there is also the chance to stay overnight in The Tower, built in 1770 and shrouded in history.
3. Crickhowell Bridge
Crickhowell is a pretty little village on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The 16th century stone bridge over the River Usk offers beautiful views of the Welsh valleys and an unusual skyline including ‘Table Mountain'.
4. Soho Farmhouse
Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire offers the ultimate getaway weekend for a posh proposal. The idyllic resort is peppered with a host of cabins and cottages, ranging from studios to a large seven-bedroom farmhouse. There are plenty of romantic activities on site, such as horse riding, boating, cycling and swimming, and a Cowshed spa for those looking for a spot of relaxation as well as romance...
5. Bedruthan Steps

6. The Peak District
The Peak District National Park is 555 square miles and covers three counties, leaving you plenty of space to enjoy the scenery without a soul in sight. With lots of picturesque villages and towns throughout the park, find a nice cosy pub to while away the afternoon before or after the event; embrace the elements and climb the highest peaks!
7. Lanhydrock Gardens
The gardens of Lanhydrock House were laid out in 1857 and the immaculate style has been retained ever since. Mosy through and take in the scenery; these calming, peaceful grounds are incredibly romantic...
8. Arundel
Sussex boasts some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, sitting pretty between the South Downs and the southern coastline. Arundel is a picturesque town steeped in history, home to both a castle and cathedral visible from miles away. Stroll through the quaint town centre or wander along the River Arun and pop the question with the beautiful Arundel castle as a backdrop.
9. High Cup Nick
High Cup Nick is a breathtaking valley in the North Pennines, a fantastic place to go for a long walk with your loved one. Take a picnic and enjoy the crisp air and stunning sunsets over the peaks, or perhaps indulge in a champagne hamper for two to celebrate the occasion..!
