5 ways to decorate with mirrors
Increase the sense of space and light in your home with these sparkling ideas
1. Reflected glory
If you have wall panelling, fix mirrors of the same style to fit the frames for a modern take on a classic feel. Combine with a soft paint colour in a light-reflective neutral such as Farrow & Ball's Shadow White or Ammonite, £22 for 750ml, to create an elegant Gustavian feel.
2. On the double
A statement mirror hung above a console is a natural choice for a stylish entrance hall. Design experts Maison & Mirrors say a mirror will lend polish to any room with little effort, illuminating dark corners with drama. Enhance visual interest by sourcing furniture with mirrored elements. This table with mirrored base is a brilliant companion piece to the mirror above.
3. Full coverage
Mirrors in a bathroom are not only decorative, but practical, too, as this is often the room with the least natural light. For a contemporary feel, try teaming a mirrored wall with wallpaper. Add a layer of foil mirror backing to bathroom mirrors to protect against moisture and preserve longevity.
4. Salvaged charm
Bring individuality to a room with a quirky alternative to a mirror hung on an alcove wall. Look for a door in a salvage yard with an existing mirrored panel or recreate the look with an old pine door and have a piece of glass cut and fitted by an expert. In a low-ceilinged room, angle the door slightly so the panel reflects the ceiling and the rest of the room to suggest extra space.
5. Deco style
Perfect for adding a boudoir feel to a bedroom, mirrors can introduce interior styles from different eras, too. This mirrored dressing table reminiscent of the Art Deco era looks beautiful with a country-style mirrored French armoire and freestanding dressing table mirror. Find original pieces at antique fairs or, for modern takes, try Laura Ashley and The French Bedroom Company.
