Unboxing the Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A Lawn Mower

The Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower arrives in a big cardboard box with lots of plastic bubble wrap to protect the mower during shipping. This box is unlikely to be recyclable, but at least your lawn mower will arrive intact. The box itself and the thick pieces of cardboard wedged inside to keep the mower stable are recyclable.

The mower itself comes ready assembled, which makes set-up a breeze. The handlebars are folded down, so all you have to do is release them using the orange circular locks on either side, turning these to the locked position once your handlebars are up. They’re also telescopic, so you can adjust the height of the handlebars to your preference by loosening and then tightening the orange lock knobs on each side at the base of the handlebars.

The Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A also comes with a grass collector, mulch plug, battery charger, battery and safety key, a manual, and a sturdy hook (complete with screws) for hanging the lawn mower in your garage or shed when not in use.

The rechargeable battery doesn’t come with much charge, so you’re unlikely to be able to use the lawn mower straight away. It takes around an hour and a half to fully charge the battery, giving you around 25 minutes of run time.

The manual also features a QR code that you can scan to access handy videos on setting up, including how to insert the battery, start the lawn mower and store it correctly. You also get access to the Husqvarna Connect app, which has maintenance and troubleshooting support, how-to videos and local dealership details.

Attaching the grass collector is easy and quick—simply lift the rear cover, remove the mulch plug (it takes a bit of strength to pull it out), and attach the grass cutter to the top edge of the chassis. The grass collector itself is made of plastic and mesh, so it folds down neatly when not in use.

I liked how easy it was to attach the battery, and the little orange safety key is a great addition. The battery will not operate the mower unless you insert and rotate the key.

Without charging the battery, unboxing, assembling and setting up for the first use takes around five to ten minutes, which is super quick. You can also use the battery with other Husqvarna tools as well as Flymo, Gardena and Bosch tools, as it’s part of the POWER FOR ALL ALLIANCE, which is excellent for the environment and great for your shed space!

The Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower is nicely designed with a glossy black, grey and orange colourway.

All the essential knobs, handles and switches are picked out in orange, and everything feels sturdy, intuitive and easy to use.

The telescopic, fold-down handles are also great for compact, vertical storage. It’s light and easy to lift, weighing just 11.8kg. Combined with the slim dimensions and the lifting handles at the front and rear, it's perfect for moving from front to back gardens and up narrow passageways if needed or even for transporting in the boot of your car.

Mowing the lawn with the Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A

Another great safety feature on the Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower is the start inhibitor on the handlebars. You need to pull it out before pressing on the handlebars to start the mower, and it automatically clicks back into place when you release them, cutting off the power.

The lawn mower is a walk-behind, so you’ll need to push it yourself, but it’s light and easy. It also features an automatic power boost that increases the blade speed when mowing longer grass - I could hear this kick in on my rambling, overgrown lawn. Compared with other battery lawnmowers that often cut out when tackling longer grass, this is a fantastic feature and came in very handy when cutting my grass, which, as you can see, had got pretty long while I was away on holiday.

There are four cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 65mm. For the first mow, I chose cutting height 3. Switching between each cutting height using the orange lever is super easy.

I was impressed with the results. At no point did the mower cut out, resulting in a tidy trim, even if it was still a little long. But I wanted to leave some height for the next test—mulching. Manoeuvring the mower around my small lawn was easy and quick, and it made short work of the edges of the lawn, which overlapped onto wood edging, leaving a clean and neat finish. Given that my lawn was very damp from weeks of rain, I was pleasantly surprised.

Swapping the grass collector for the mulch plug is pretty straightforward, but you do have to ensure the mulch plug is firmly installed. Listen for the ‘click’ as you push it in. Mulching disperses the grass clippings back into your lawn, protecting it from weeds and adding moisture, so it’s a good idea to do it regularly.

While the 34 cm cutting width was ideally suited to my small lawn, gardeners with larger lawns may prefer something broader. My grass collector got full pretty quickly, too, almost overflowing at the end of my first cut, so bear that in mind if you’re mowing particularly long grass or have a medium to large lawn.

I loved the lawn's finish after the mulching. It was neat and tidy again, and there were zero clippings to compost! The dog seemed to agree.

Ease of Use

The Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower gets full marks from me on ease of use. It’s so light that it’s easy to switch directions or turn corners, and the extra safety features, such as the battery key and start inhibitor, make it a great lawn mower for families or homes with pets.

The handles at the front and back mean you can move it around easily or lift it to enjoy the vertical storage option. While I haven’t yet got my drill out to install the handy hook, I plan to store it vertically in my shed.

While the battery life isn’t very long, at around 25 minutes, this is more than enough for most small to medium-sized lawns. Plus, an LED battery level indicator shows how much battery life you have left. I mowed my small lawn three times, and there was still some power in the battery.

Another thing to mention is how quiet the Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower is. At just 74dB in operation, it’s around the same volume as a vacuum cleaner, so you can be sure you won’t wake the neighbours on a Sunday morning.

Overall, it’s smooth, easy to use with soft-grip handles, and easy to store. If I had any niggles about it at all, it would be nice to have an accessory for cleaning damp clippings from the cutting deck. I used an old paintbrush to do the job instead.

Maintenance

Husqvarna advises cleaning the lawn mower's plastic parts with a clean, dry cloth and using a brush to remove leaves, grass and dirt from the cutting deck. You should always make sure that the battery and battery charger are clean and dry before putting the battery into the charger or the mower. If the battery terminals get dirty, you can clean them with a soft, dry cloth or compressed air.

Husqvarna also advises owners to check the blade regularly to see if it is damaged or blunt and to have a professional sharpen, replace and balance the blade if necessary.

How does it rate online?

While it’s hard to find user reviews of the Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower (it’s not available on Amazon, for example, and you can’t leave a review on the Husqvarna website), it’s performed very well on review sites.

Gardener’s World awarded it a BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Best Buy in 2023 for ease of use, giving it an excellent rating of 4.9 stars out of 5. Which? consumer reviews site also gives it a respectable score of 70%. They say it tackles grass ‘with aplomb’ and is easy to use, while Gardener’s World says it’s ‘great for small gardens’.

Should you buy the Husqvarna Aspire lawn mower?

The Husqvarna Aspire is the ideal lawn mower for anyone looking for a reliable, sturdy, cordless mower that can tackle long grass on small to medium lawns.

From set up to operation, it’s easy, quick, and light and small enough to be whisked around your lawn. The cutting quality is excellent, and having a mulching option is super handy. It’s also quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours.

The Husqvarna Aspire LC34-P4A battery-powered lawn mower is also ideal for anyone short on storage. With telescopic, fold-down handles, a collapsible cutting collector and a sturdy hook for vertical storage, you don’t need to take up valuable floor space in your shed or garage.

While it won’t suit larger lawns, the 25-minute run time is ideal for small to medium gardens, and the automatic boost in power for long grass is a fantastic additional feature. The fact that you can swap out the battery to use on other Husqvarna tools, as well as Flymo, Bosch and Gardena, seals the deal for me
