Custom-built MDF cabinetry gives a new lease of life to this historical farmhouse kitchen. It has been spray-painted in a muted grey, which works beautifully with the original brick floor. Solid block oak has been used for the peninsula worktop to accentuate the colour of the beams overhead, while practical Honed Nero Assoluto granite tops the cabinetry around the wet area.

2/8 Peninsula
As well as offering extra storage, the peninsula forms a cosy breakfast bar. It also keeps much of the working kitchen in one area, keeping guests and children out of the cook's zone.

3/8 Sink area
A ceramic double-bowl sink is the obvious choice for a traditional kitchen. The elegant spout tap in brushed nickel has matching ceramic levers. Drainer grooves within the black granite worktop are a neater solution than a separate drainer. Although wooden worktops are great for country kitchens, stone surfaces are more practical, so consider mixing and matching.

4/8 Food storage
A tall Shaker larder cupboard makes the most of an awkward corner and echoes the unfitted look of the rest of the cabinetry.

7/8 Flooring
Having removed the existing screed, the owners discovered this stunning original brick flooring, which was carefully cleaned and kept as it is.

8/8 Dining area
A peninsula separates the kitchen from the dining area. An antique table and chairs takes pride of place and is large enough for family gatherings. Bunting adds a classic country touch that makes the space feel welcoming.
