5 steps to achieve a country kitchen
Get the country kitchen of your dreams by including these five key elements in your scheme
A versatile range cooker is the perfect partner for a country kitchen, especially when nestled in an alcove. Add impact with an eye-catching red or British Racing green design, or play it safe with a smart black or cream one and add a pop of colour with accessories instead. Why not treat yourself to cast-iron cookware to continue the traditional look?
If you've space, a traditional dresser is a sure-fire way to add a dash of country style to your kitchen. It offers additional storage space, the perfect spot to display your favourite finds, and it can also bridge the gap between the kitchen and dining area in an open-plan room. It may be cheaper to buy a secondhand design and paint it to tie in with your decor.
Upgrade to a ceramic butlersink and your kitchen will be fit for a country manor. You'll have plenty of room for washing large pans and dishes that won't fit in the dishwasher and make a style statement at the same time. Pair your kitchen sink with an elegant curved tap with lever handles - gold, brushed-steel and sleek black finishes all work well.
Inject charm as well as country style into your scheme with beautifully patterned kitchen tiles. Hand-painted designs will add a rustic touch and make an ideal splashback behind a hob or sink. Or, dot them throughout your kitchen among plain tiles for a more subtle look. Pick out one of the colours in the tiles for your accessories.
Pastel colours and floral accessories will finish your country kitchen off in style. Painting your walls in a sorbet shade will create the most impact but, if you're after a quicker transformation, replace your accessories with pretty pastel buys. Finally, pop a floral oilcloth on your kitchen table and lay it with vintage china. If you're after a project to sink your teeth into, buy a secondhand wall shelf and paint it to match your scheme then back it with an offcut of floral wallpaper.
