The idea for the pared-back scheme in this kitchen developed around the pale grey range cooker. Off-white units have been teamed with a white marble worktop, and glasses, accessories and upholstered chairs in pink lift the scheme.

2/7 Before the makeover

This kitchen was built in the basement of an ambitious renovation project where nine bedsits were restored back into a five-storey home. The basement level leads out to the garden. The floor was split in two to accommodate the kitchen, a den and a utilty room.

3/7 Open kitchen shelving

Open shelving instead of wall cupboards is an easy way to make a kitchen feel more spacious. Choose floating shelves to eliminate imposing brackets for a seamless finish.

If you can't find a dresser to fit your kitchen, try looking for pieces at an auction house. Second-hand wooden furniture can easily be restored or painted to fit in with your scheme.

Mirrors don't commonly feature in kitchens but this large wooden framed mirror looks fabulous above the Aga. It reflects light around the kitchen, increasing the sense of space.

Choose cupboards and drawers to suit your family's needs. A built-in cutlery drawer will make things easier to find when you're in the middle of cooking up a tasty feast.
