The owners of this home inherited a beech Shaker-style kitchen when they moved in. The layout worked well, but they weren't keen on the colour of the units, so they decided to paint them. They spent a week priming the cupboard doors, then painted them in a pale grey.

The owners kept the existing stainless-steel appliances as they were in good condition and reused the stainless-steel handles on the cupboards. Vintage-style storage canisters co-ordinate perfectly with the white worktops and Shaker units.

There's a dining table and chairs at the far end of the open-plan room, with doors leading out to the garden. The oak dining table and chairs and chest of drawers were rescued from a local junk shop.

Prior to the makeover, the cabinets were in good condition but the combination of beech-coloured doors and black worktops made the space feel dark and gloomy.
