Give traditional patterns a modern spin in your home with Habitat’s fresh take on Morris & Co. designs
Yasmin Fatollahy shows us how to add warmth to your home with Habitat’s exclusive collection with Morris & Co.
Creating a stylish yet comfortable home is high up on everyone’s interior agenda – you want your home to reflect the latest trends, but with a timeless quality. Be inspired by William Morris’s famous quote, ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’ by choosing enduringly beautiful pieces that will last for years to come. Enter: Habitat’s collaborative new collection blending their contemporary design prowess with the heritage patterns and forms of Morris & Co. In this video, Interior Stylist and Content Creator Yasmin Fatollahy shows how to use the collection to create a modern heritage-inspired home.
Mix traditional and modern
As the 19th century’s most celebrated designer, William Morris’ iconic patterns are front and centre of this Morris & Co. collaboration. The design team at Habitat has cleverly balanced the Victorian-inspired designs with contemporary shapes and styles, creating modern homewares inspired by the rich traditions of the past.
Yasmin’s home embodies this enviable combination of old and new. She bases her scheme on contemporary furniture that’s peppered with traditional touches to make the bedroom feel warm and inviting. Yasmin’s bed is a perfect example of this – the modern bed frame grounds the room while the bedding, featuring a re-scaled interpretation of a Morris & Co. pattern, is a nod to heritage design. Just like the rest of the pieces in the collection, this updated iteration of the original heritage pattern is exclusive to the collaboration.
Choose a warm colour palette
Colour has the ability to completely change the ambience of a room, so it’s important to pay attention to the palette you select for a space. In a bedroom where relaxation comes first, soothing hues of blue, green and beige will make switching off simple.
Yasmin’s favoured colour palette for her home perfectly aligns with that of the Habitat x Morris & Co. collection. Using lots of colour is vital to her interior styling and these muted, warm tones add a sense of calm to the space.
The Timeless Pimpernel and Willow Boughs bedding sets the tone for getting a good night’s rest, while a neutral throw softens the look. Bedding is the easiest way to experiment with pattern as it can be changed depending on your mood and season – but we doubt you’ll want to switch out this fabulous print.
Create a base, then add interest
If you’re new to using colour and pattern in your home, allow the Habitat x Morris & Co. collection to be your guide. Heritage patterns and prints have been combined with Habitat’s contemporary, industry-leading design so you can find something that is both beautiful and functional. All the furniture in the collection is solid oak and hand-built, meaning the quality is palpable – right down to the joint detailing.
Core pieces of furniture that are classic in design will mean you can update with statement patterns and accessories as and when you desire. Yasmin explains how you don’t have to buy an entire sofa and chair set, you can add smaller pieces like the Morris & Co. embossed lamps or patterned cushions to make a snug area warm and inviting.
Adding interest through patterns is a thoughtful way to add personality to your home. Yasmin’s love of pattern clashing inspires us to go bold, but make sure to find a common thread between the texture or colour to tie it all together. Habitat x Morris & Co.’s collection does this for you – all you need to do is decide which pieces will make your space feel thoroughly yours.
